Artist Bio
As a self-taught artist Michael has evolved from an expressionistic urban cityscaper to painting delightfully vibrant flowers. The gritty and emotional turmoil of the cities, religion, and haunting figures has shed away, giving way to vibrance and a welcoming warmth. His current style of painting over-sized flower stills is inspired by his time spent in France, Italy and Napa Valley. The viewer is drawn in to their own moment of welcoming at the Hotel Negresco Nice, Hotel Borgo San Felice, Hotel FortySeven in Rome, or even the Villagio in Yountville.
Michael started painting in 1997 when he was staying in St. Helena. His paintings were expressionistic, brut, outsider and evolving daily. The work was urban with a tribal feel, and at times mixed with cubist figures or child-like scenes. During a trip to Napa Valley Michael was inspired by the garden at Trefethen Family Vineyard and so he began his flower evolution. He continues to be inspired by new places and monthly visits to Napa Valley.
Since 1999, Michael has shown his work in numerous galleries throughout California and internationally. He has been invited to the Florance Biennal of Contemporary Art for the past three years. Michael has lived in Placerville, California for over 20 years and enjoys being involved in his local community and giving back through art. He has donated his art to several events and to the local High School drama department to be used in their theatre productions.
His work will make you stop, take a second look and then linger, finding yourself in your own moment of good times. If a piece by Michael Hoffee happens to be on one of your walls you may find yourself slipping in several peeks a day with an inspiration that there is beauty out there.
